Fifty is the turning point. The rate curve steepens sharply between 50 and 60, and the question changes: less “replace my income for twenty years”, more “leave nothing to be paid”: the end of the mortgage, taxes at death, funeral costs, a helping hand for the children.

It is also the age at which many people discover no-medical-exam insurance, because their health file has grown thicker. The tables separate the two paths: standard underwriting, cheaper if your health is good, and simplified issue, a few questions and no blood test.

In brief, at age 50, non-smoker, survey of October 30, 2026:

  • 20-year term, $250,000: from $46.80 a month for a woman, $68.62 for a man.
  • Permanent insurance payable for life, $100,000: from $118.89 a month for a woman, $135.45 for a man.

What these rates mean at age 50

  • At 50, a 20-year term covers you to 70: enough to pay off the mortgage and see the children settled. Beyond that, it becomes very expensive to renew; permanent insurance takes over.
  • For funeral costs and taxes at death, level-premium permanent insurance is the right tool: today’s premium never changes, even at 80.
  • Simplified issue costs more than standard underwriting for the same amount, but within a few days it accepts files that the standard path declines or charges extra for. Ask for both rates before choosing.
  • Premiums rise quickly between 50 and 55: once the decision is made, the month you make it has a price.

Frequently asked questions

If the need ends on a known date, mortgage, studies, a loan, term remains cheaper. If the need never ends, funeral costs, taxes at death, an inheritance, permanent insurance costs more per month but will never be more affordable than at 50. Many people combine the two.

Three doors, in order of price: standard underwriting with an extra premium if the risk is moderate; simplified issue, a few questions and no blood test; guaranteed issue, no questions, more modest amounts. An advisor who knows the insurers knows which ones accept which diagnosis.

It covers the loan balance, which goes down, for a premium that does not, and it pays the bank, not your family. An individual term policy for the same amount often costs less and leaves the capital to your loved ones.
