Your forties pile everything on at once: the mortgage is not paid off, the children cost more every year, income is at its highest, and some people start to see blood pressure, cholesterol or a diagnosis appear. It is the age at which the difference between “insuring now” and “insuring in five years” adds up the most.

It is also the age for reviewing a policy taken out at 30: is the amount still enough, does the term run until the children are independent? The tables give the rate for a new policy; compare it with yours before letting it go.

In brief, at age 40, non-smoker, survey of October 30, 2026:

  • 20-year term, $250,000: from $19.58 a month for a woman, $26.33 for a man.
  • Permanent insurance payable for life, $100,000: from $75.38 a month for a woman, $90.90 for a man.

What these rates mean at age 40

  • At 40, a 20-year term covers you to 60, which is the end of most mortgages and of the children’s studies: it is the most requested term at this age.
  • A smoker often pays double the rates shown. Quitting twelve months before applying restores non-smoker rates with most insurers.
  • Permanent insurance becomes a real topic at 40 if your estate includes a cottage, a rental property or a business: taxes at death can be calculated, and insured.
  • A recent diagnosis does not close the door: simplified issue products cost more, but they accept files that standard underwriting declines or charges an extra premium for.

Frequently asked questions

No: it is the most common age to take one out. It covers you to 60, and most contracts let you convert it to permanent insurance without a medical exam before the end of the term.

It lets you turn part or all of the term policy into permanent insurance, with no new evidence of health, up to a cut-off age (often 65 or 70). For someone whose health is deteriorating, it is the most valuable clause in the contract.

Not necessarily: the amount follows each person’s income to replace and responsibilities. A joint first-to-die policy costs less than two policies but pays out only once; an advisor compares the two options.
