Your life insurance at every age

Retired, approaching retirement, or looking for life insurance for an elderly person, a parent or a senior: the options change with age, and the right insurer at 55 is not the same one at 75. Here is what applies to each age bracket.

Life insurance at 50 and over (ages 50 to 59)

Between 50 and 59, most applications go through simplified acceptance: a few health questions, no blood test. The amounts offered without an exam generally range from $25,000 to $500,000, depending on the insurer and your answers. At 55, a policy with a medical exam is still a worthwhile option if your health is good, because the premium can be lower. An advisor compares both routes before submitting an application.

Life insurance at 60 and over (ages 60 to 69)

From age 60, simplified acceptance is still available, but some companies reduce the maximum amount granted without an exam. At 65, many people aim for modest coverage meant for funeral expenses and the costs that follow a death, while others still want to cover a mortgage balance or taxes at death. Guaranteed issue, with no health questions at all, serves as the fallback when health makes acceptance harder. Premiums vary a great deal from one insurer to another at this age, which is why comparing matters.

Life insurance at 70 and over (ages 70 to 79)

After 70, the choice of companies narrows, but products still exist. Simplified acceptance and guaranteed issue are the two usual routes, with no blood test or physical exam. The amounts offered are more modest than at 50 and the premium is higher for the same coverage. At 75 and over, each insurer applies its own age limits for new applications: an advisor checks which ones will still accept your application.

Life insurance at 80 and over

At 80 and over, guaranteed issue is generally the only option available, and only a few companies still accept new applications. With guaranteed issue, there are no health questions and no exam; coverage is modest and mainly serves to cover funeral expenses. The monthly premium is higher than for the same amount at a younger age, and most of these policies include a waiting period, often two years, before the full amount is payable in the event of a natural death. We will tell you honestly whether a solution is possible in your situation, or whether it is not.

Two ways to be accepted

Simplified acceptance

A few health questions, no blood test or physical exam. This is the option that offers the highest amounts, up to $500,000 depending on the insurer and your answers. An application can be declined if the answers to the questionnaire do not meet the criteria.

  • A few health questions, no blood test
  • Up to $500,000
  • Lower premium than guaranteed issue

Guaranteed issue

No health questions and guaranteed acceptance, for people aged 50 and over. In return, the premium is higher and coverage more modest than with simplified acceptance. Most of these policies also include a waiting period, often two years, before the full amount is payable in the event of a natural death.

  • No health questions (guaranteed issue only)
  • Guaranteed acceptance
  • Higher premium, more modest coverage

Frequently asked questions about life insurance after 50

How much does life insurance cost at 65?

The premium depends on the coverage amount, sex, smoking status, health and the type of product chosen. For guidance, the “Indicative rates by age” table on this page gives the real premiums for standard permanent life insurance from age 50 to 80, for $25,000 and $100,000; guaranteed issue products cost more for the same amount, and the premium rises with age. A small amount of coverage meant for funeral expenses therefore costs far less than coverage of several hundred thousand dollars. Two people of the same age can also pay very different premiums from one insurer to another: have your file compared before relying on a posted rate.

Can you get life insurance after 70?

Yes, products exist after 70, mainly simplified acceptance and guaranteed issue. The amounts offered are generally more modest and the premium is higher than for the same amount at 50. Each insurer sets its own age limits for new applications, and some companies stop accepting new applicants earlier than others. An advisor checks which companies still accept your age before submitting an application.

Do you need a medical exam for life insurance at 60?

Not necessarily. With simplified acceptance, you answer a few health questions, with no blood test or physical exam. With guaranteed issue, there are no health questions at all. A policy with a medical exam involves more steps, but it can give you a lower premium if you are in good health. The choice depends on your situation and the amount you want.

What is the difference between simplified acceptance and guaranteed issue?

With simplified acceptance, you answer a short health questionnaire: the insurer can decline the application, but the amounts offered are higher and the premium is generally lower. With guaranteed issue, there are no health questions and acceptance is guaranteed, but coverage is more modest and the premium higher. Most of these policies also include a waiting period, often two years, before the full amount is payable in the event of a natural death. Your advisor explains the exact terms of the policy proposed.

Can I be insured if I have diabetes, high blood pressure or another health problem?

Often, yes. Many people living with diabetes or high blood pressure are insured, sometimes at standard rates, sometimes with an extra premium, depending on how well the condition is controlled and the treatments involved. If simplified acceptance is not possible, guaranteed issue remains a solution, since it asks no health questions. An advisor reviews your file before submitting an application, which avoids needless refusals.

How much life insurance should you have in retirement?

The amount depends on what you want to cover. Many retirees aim to cover funeral expenses and the costs that follow a death, which is often a modest amount of coverage. Others also want to pay off a mortgage balance, a debt or the taxes due at death on an RRSP or a cottage, or leave a sum to their children or grandchildren. An advisor runs the numbers with you and shows you the cost of each scenario, with no obligation to buy.
