Life insurance over 50

How much does life insurance cost after 50? The real rates, and the three doors

After 50, the price of life insurance depends less on your age than on the door you walk through: standard underwriting, simplified issue or guaranteed issue. Here are the real premiums surveyed from Quebec insurers, and how to choose.

“I’m too old for that.” It is the sentence our advisors hear most often on the phone from people over 50, and in the vast majority of cases it is wrong. What is true is that the price rises with age, and above all that it depends on the route you choose. This guide gives the real figures, surveyed on October 30, 2026 from the insurers we compare, then explains the three doors and how to pick the right one.

Why the price climbs after 50

Life insurance is a bet the insurer makes on your life expectancy. Between 30 and 50, the probability of dying within the year stays low and rises slowly; after 50, it roughly doubles every eight to ten years. The premium follows that curve. That is why waiting is expensive: the same protection, taken at 55 rather than at 50, generally costs 25 to 40% more, for the entire life of the contract.

The need changes too. At 35, you insure an income that would have to be replaced for twenty years; at 60, you insure what you leave behind: a funeral, the tax the estate will pay on RRSPs and capital gains, a loan balance, a net amount for the children. The amount requested is smaller, often $25,000 to $100,000, and that is what keeps the premium affordable despite the age.

The real rates, from 50 to 70

Lowest monthly premium in our survey, for a non-smoker, for permanent life insurance with premiums payable for life (fixed premium, protection until death), under standard underwriting, that is, with the usual health questions and, depending on the amount, an exam.

Two things to take from it. First: a woman pays 15 to 25% less than a man of the same age, because she lives longer; that holds everywhere. Second: the price per $1,000 of coverage falls as the amount rises. At 60, $100,000 does not cost four times $25,000, because the policy’s fixed costs are the same. If the budget allows, a somewhat higher amount is proportionally cheaper.

The three doors

1. Standard underwriting: the cheapest, if your health holds up

This is the route behind the tables above. A full health questionnaire, sometimes a nurse who comes to your home to take a blood sample, and the insurer sets its price on what it finds. In good health, it is always the cheapest door, and it opens up the highest amounts. A controlled condition, blood pressure, cholesterol, well-managed type 2 diabetes, does not close it: it often brings an extra premium, 25 to 100% more, which can still come in below the price of simplified issue. We always ask for this price first.

2. Simplified issue: a few questions, no tests

Between five and fifteen yes-or-no questions about serious diagnoses in recent years; no blood sample, no exam, an answer within a few days. Amounts generally run from $25,000 to $500,000 depending on the insurer. The price is higher than under standard underwriting for the same amount, because the insurer knows less about you.

The gap with standard underwriting is the price of simplicity and quick acceptance. It is worth paying when an exam might lead to a heavier extra premium, a long delay or a refusal; it is not worth paying for someone in good health.

3. Guaranteed issue: no questions, acceptance assured

Nobody is turned down. In return, the premium is the highest of the three, the amounts are modest, generally $5,000 to $50,000, and most contracts carry a two-year waiting period: if death from natural causes occurs during that period, the insurer refunds the premiums with interest rather than paying the benefit; an accidental death is covered from day one.

Guaranteed issue is a door of last resort, useful and honest when it is presented for what it is. What is not honest is selling it to someone who would have been accepted under simplified issue for half the price. That is the first thing an advisor checks.

How to choose the amount

  • Funeral and final bills: in Quebec, a complete funeral most often costs between $5,000 and $15,000; add the last bills, clearing out the home and estate fees, and $25,000 is the most requested amount after 60.
  • The estate’s tax bill: RRSPs and RRIFs are taxed in full on the death of the last spouse, investments and a cottage on the capital gain. An accountant or an advisor puts a figure on the bill; life insurance pays it, in tax-free money, at the moment it comes due.
  • A loan or mortgage balance: a 10-year term may be enough if the loan ends before 70; beyond that, permanent insurance is almost always more economical than renewing a term policy.
  • A net inheritance: a life insurance benefit paid to a named beneficiary arrives within a few weeks, outside the estate, free of tax and, in most cases, out of reach of creditors.

The mistakes we see every month

  • Accepting guaranteed issue without asking for the simplified issue price. The gap can reach double for the same amount.
  • Taking term insurance after 60 for a permanent need. It looks cheaper in the first year; at renewal at 70, the premium explodes and most people drop it, having built nothing.
  • Signing with the first insurer that says yes. At 65, the price of the same protection often varies twofold from one insurer to the next; it is the age bracket where comparing pays off the most.
  • Forgetting the beneficiary. Naming “my estate” sends the benefit through the notary and the creditors; naming a person has it paid directly.

Going further

The full tables by age, from 50 to 80, are on the life insurance over 50 page, and the rates at age 50, age 60 and age 70 for every product are in our rate barometer. The advisor who calls you back compares the three doors for your file, and tells you which one is right, not which one is most expensive.

Frequently asked questions

If someone will have something to pay when you die, yes: the funeral, the estate’s tax bill on RRSPs and investments, a mortgage or loan balance, or simply a net amount for the children. Life insurance remains the simplest way to provide for it, and the benefit paid out is not taxable for the beneficiary.

Simplified issue asks a few health questions, with no blood test and no exam; it turns down some applicants but offers intermediate amounts and rates. Guaranteed issue asks no questions and accepts everyone, in exchange for a higher premium, modest amounts and a waiting period, often two years, before the full amount is payable on a death from natural causes.

Often double the non-smoker premium, sometimes more for permanent insurance. Twelve months without tobacco restores the non-smoker rate at most insurers; if you have just quit, wait for the anniversary of quitting before you sign, or take the policy now and ask for the rate to be reviewed in a year.

Most group plans reduce or cut off life insurance at retirement. Some offer a right to convert to an individual policy without proof of health, within 31 days of the end of the plan: it is a valuable door if your health has deteriorated, but the premium is often high. Compare it with the tables above before accepting.
